Global Health: The Role of Vaccinations

Vaccinations have transformed public health over the past century, saving millions of lives by preventing the spread of infectious diseases.

From smallpox to polio, vaccines have eradicated or dramatically reduced the prevalence of some of the world’s deadliest illnesses. However, despite the evidence of their efficacy, vaccination rates for certain diseases, such as influenza and pneumococcal infections, remain lower than necessary to protect communities, especially vulnerable populations.

This article will explore the importance of vaccinations in maintaining global health, specifically focusing on influenza and pneumococcal vaccines, and will include a cautionary tale about the consequences of choosing not to vaccinate.
