In 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) chose “My Health, My Right” as its theme, emphasizing the fundamental human right to health and the importance of individual empowerment in accessing and managing healthcare services. This theme resonates deeply with the global commitment to achieving health equity and ensuring that every person can realize their right to the highest attainable standard of health. We will now explore the significance of this theme and discuss practical ways individuals can advocate for their health rights.

Understanding the right to health

The right to health is a fundamental human right enshrined in international treaties and declarations, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It implies that everyone has the right to enjoy the highest standard of physical and mental health, without discrimination. However, realizing this right requires not only government action but also active participation and empowerment at the individual level.

Key Elements of “My Health, My Right”

Access to Health Care: Lack of access to essential healthcare services is a major barrier to realizing the right to health. Individuals should advocate for policies and programs that ensure equitable access to quality healthcare, regardless of socioeconomic status, geographic location, or other factors.

Health literacy: Health literacy empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their health. Advocating for comprehensive health education in schools and communities can enhance health literacy and promote preventive healthcare practices.

Patient-centred care: Individuals have the right to be treated with dignity, respect, and empathy in healthcare settings. Promoting patient-centered care involves advocating for healthcare systems that prioritize individual preferences, needs, and values.

Health promotion and disease prevention: Prevention is key to achieving optimal health outcomes. Individuals can advocate for policies that promote healthy lifestyles, preventive screenings, and vaccination programs to reduce the burden of disease.

Empowering Individuals to Advocate for Their Health Rights

  1. Know your rights: Educate yourself about your rights to healthcare and health services. Familiarize yourself with local and national health policies that impact access to care.

2. Speak up: Advocate for yourself and others. If you encounter barriers to healthcare access or discriminatory practices, don’t hesitate to raise your concerns with healthcare providers, policymakers, or advocacy organizations.

3. Engage in community action: Join community health campaigns and initiatives that promote health rights and address healthcare disparities. Collective action is a powerful tool for driving positive change.

4. Utilize technology: Leverage technology to access health information, connect with support networks, and engage in virtual advocacy efforts. Social media platforms can be valuable tools for raising awareness and mobilizing support.

5. Collaborate with healthcare providers: Build a collaborative relationship with your healthcare providers. Be proactive in discussing your health goals, treatment options, and concerns.

6. Support Health equity initiatives: Build a collaborative relationship with your healthcare providers. Be proactive in discussing your health goals, treatment options, and concerns.

My Health, My Right” encapsulates the principle that health is not just a privilege but a fundamental human right that must be protected and upheld. By empowering individuals to advocate for their health rights, we can contribute to building more equitable and inclusive healthcare systems worldwide. Let us all join hands in promoting health as a universal right and working towards a healthier, more just future for everyone. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that every individual’s right to health is respected, protected, and fulfilled
